Collective Notes from our All Day Tech Coach Meeting:
    Ideas from AZTEA Conference

    Alan November
Monica—His presentation was awesome. Never considered doing a podcast before with 1st graders but now motivated to do that.

Jan—very down to earth and realistic in his thinking. I was just really impressed with his realism. When his desktop looked like mine, I was Yeah! Real “real” with 21st century thinking and what we need to do as educators.

Katrina—when he was the sub in the classroom and had the kids read their poems then and there on recorder and played it back, that was impressive. And it didn’t look very hard to do.

Mitch—spent time with Alan November while he was talking to students as part of Listening to Students Voices and he was really genuine in the way he was talking to them and the way they use communication. He used a podcast when he was talking to the high school kids. Kids were saying they need the music in the background to help them concentrate. They don’t concentrate as well when they don’t have the music (when the teacher makes them turn it off) They talked a lot about how they used their myspace pages as communication and how we should be able to do that in schools. Novemeber also said we need to know as much about the web as we know about libraries.

Lee—I was impressed by how he talked about unblocking websites. He was really honest about the importance of these tools for students and how we are blocking them.

Peggy—we need to work with our policy and change it—we need to get our policy in line with the technology. Question and concern: how do we balance between what we need to be doing and the concern with irresponsible use.

Question: if students screw up on internet, is the best consequence to take it away from them?

We have parents who won’t even sign the AUP now…if we “open it up” to sites like myspace, what will happen?

If there is a site and you can quote me a performance objective that it is for and it is not a gaming site, send it to me and I will see about unblocking it. I will not unblock gaming sites.

Lee—is it possible to get a site blocked/unblocked for a limited period of time. (Yes.)

Discussion about labs v. computers in classroom…

    Sessions

    Web2.0 with Brett Hinton
Tamra—love when I can use something right away. Was able to go right back and set up Wiki’s and my 2nd grade kids loved it. They were typing notes to each other and they found out they could communicate that way. Can now see it going into content knowledge. Didn’t have to set up individual accounts, just had them use my account and put recipient in subject line.

Robert—social networking site for bookmarks—del.icio.us. Can use it for accessing resources. I will never update my webpage again. Getting help from others on a topic you are interested in—soo super easy. Use it for organizing all the information for the kids. Teaching a class on it on March 9.

Monica—when Alan November was talking about the whole how yugio thing was popular and then the schools were banning them; this is the same. We are blocking popular culture. What we need to be doing is teaching kids to be responsible.
Peggy’s concern: can we really say that all TEACHERS will be responsible with this and monitor it adequately to make sure all kids are responsible.

    Google Earth
How to set up folders for different locations. English teacher presented how he used it to locate all the places in the literature he’s reading. Betsy–will have students use google earth to record seismic data. Not sure how to do it right now with one computer, but is planning to get it figured out for next year. One question: how to create a ksf file and upload it to google earth? May need to be ftp’d says Peggy. (if it’s bigger than 1mg needs to be ftp’d)

    CCS Booth
Printer that printed pictures for you—very expensive but can be used as a fund raiser at a dance and the first time the kids pay for pictures at a dance it’s paid for.

    Rosetta Stone
Cris—Really liked Rosetta Stone and the kids who have been playing with it love it. Think the website is amazing.
