Agenda: SMARTBoard Review

Meeting Notes:  All memebers of the group were present and participated.  We began the class discussing the technology test that Peggy wanted us to complete.  We did this as a group, and discussed along the way ideas that we had.  Overall the sense was that this has the potential of being a great resource.  We liked the questions about ethics in particular.  The problem that we had was the lack of confirmation in the practical section.  There was no confirmation that the task was done correctly or not, which is understandable for an assessment.  If just was unsettling for a few of us. I think the thing we would have liked to see was the effect of all out clicks through the menu.  If I am changing margins, I would have liked to see if I did it right before the question moved on. As computer users, we go through the motions and see imediate results and if they are incorrect, we can go back and try again.  Not seeing the results was tough for a few of us.

We decided as a group to complete the 21st century assignment at the next meeting.  Our high school members are travelling to see 21 century skills in action and we all though it better to complete this once they were back.

We also had a very brief, due to time constraints, review of SMART software, in particular, the changes to the notebook program with the release of 9.5.

Betsy and I held a staff development class on uses of the SMARTBoard. About 25 teachers attended. We both presented different activities and projects using SmartTechnologies. Betsy only has a projector but by using the SmartBoard tools she is able to create some very interesting lessons for her students. Our agenda included an overview of the projector and how to use it. We went on to SmartBoard basice and watched the 2 minute tutorial from Peggy’s site. We then showed various activities including PowerPoint demonstrations, adding links, and then how to use the gallery. Both Mr. Hannah and Mr. Lansa were present and the outcome is that we are looking into grants and starting a technology club here at Wilson. It was a very productive presentation.

Agenda: 21st Century Learning Skills; Professional Development Plan

Meeting Notes: We began with a discussion about the all day technology day and how we all felt it was beneficial. Each of us contributed what session we had selected and talked about how we actually worked on individual plans and were able to implement them in our class. We also brought Bill and Lee up to date with the information since they were attending a 21st Century Skills conference that day.
Betsy and Jan talked a little about their first Staff Development presentation at Wilson. The interest and committment of the teachers will determine how the technology will be distributed as it becomes available at Wilson.
Bill and Lee talked about their conference and the impact it had on their teaching. They were able to work with actual High School students and see how they used the technology tools provided by their districts. They commented that is was total Project Based Learning.
We then worked on our Learning Skills form and our Personal Development Plan.

Our next meeting will be January 25th @ CDO- 4:30-6:00

Agenda: Each school’s chance to check in and share concerns, ask questions and report successes from their campuses.

Meeting Notes: C.D.O. is putting together a presentation that has a basic smart board training and then breaks into Department presentations that allows teachers from specific departments to show the teachers in their dept. how they incorporate Smartboards into their lessons/teaching.

Rio Vista is focusing on student engagement and encouragement and how Smartboards can energize a classroom.

Painted Sky is focusing on Smartboard training and building a Smartboard Lesson Library. In order to have your classroom considered for a new Smartboard teachers must first have completed basic Smartboard training. Teachers are creating Smartboard lessons (by grade level) to be compiled in to a lesson library. This librarary will be available to all teachers on campus.

A question about how elementary schools account for student height was asked and a short discussion followed.

Amphitheater High School, Alternative High School, Wilson K-8 (elementary), Wilson K-8 (middle) will be checking in and letting us know what’s going on at their campuses soon.

I just started using a SMARTboard in my classroom this week! It is hung in my room, but the projector still needs to be mounted on the ceiling. The students have been good about not bumping the projector that is sitting in the center of my room.
The students are totally psyched about using the SMARTboard. One of my special needs students who has a very hard time writing anything down on paper wanted to write something on the SMARTboard. So I had him write it down first in his notes, and then share it on the board with the class.
Our school just received many new projectors which teachers are setting up in their classroom. It seems to be going smoothly. Not many people are incorporating SMART Notebook yet into their lessons.
We are still scheduled to get a SMARTboard installed in the elementary and MS lab. Meanwhile kids in middle school are practicing their writing on my board. A few elementary teachers will be receiving SMARTboards through the 21st century grant.

My SmartBoard is hung!!! It is awesome. I also did my first presentation on SmartBoards and I got the staff motivated to raise the funds to have a SmartBoard in every room.

  6. Meeting on 3/8 4:00 – 5:30 at Wilson K-8 Rm 466.
    Team Leader: Betsy Wilkening

Agenda: Each school’s chance to check in and share progress, concerns and questions.

Ways to fund additional SMARTboards at each school was discussed.
    - Jan Horetski talked about setting up an elementary Technology Club at Wilson that could receive parent donations. This is currently being done by Robert Walling at Painted Sky. The middle school Technology Club at Wilson has not progressed beyond the discussion phase.

    - Katie Demetriades and Bill Pike mentioned that they recently received additional Title I funding Katie said that they have a goal to place one SMARTboard in each classroom and some of the funding will go towrds this goal.

    - Wilson K-8 does not have access to this funding, so other alternatives in addition to Technology Club were discussed.
    – Business Partnerships is one avenue discussed.
    – Grant writing help was also discussed with different possibilities. It was mentioned that there might be some assistance available through a career ladder person. It was also suggested that maybe professional stay-at-home parents might be able to help.

    - Lee Street said that CDO was purchasing additional SMARTboards. At CDO, a teacher will NOT receive a SMARTboard unless they attend the training.

    - Making SMARTboards available for more than one teacher was discussed. Katie said that they have a cart with a SMARTBoard, laptop and projector on it. Unfortunately it is limited to one floor in their school, since it will not fit into the elevator on the cart. Betsy has offered her room to teachers on her team to use with the SMARTboard on days she has computer lab. The Language Arts teacher is going to do that shortly.

We talked about what is happening at Wilson with the SmartBoards and 21st Century classroom. We suggested to the admin that the room be placed on the Middle School side for a couple of reasons. First, the elementary side received the first 21st Century room. But – SmartBoards and projectors have been approved by the state as science tools that can be funded with Tax Credit monies. We feel that the elementary teachers will be getting much of that equipment through the generosity of the parents and other tax donations. The MS teachers that are not science teachers will truly benefit from the SmartBoard technologies. There will also be an Elementary Lunch Bunch for technology next year. Teachers have already asked for a group to start meeting at least monthly to discuss and share technologies they are using in their individual classrooms. The administrations has set up common files for teachers to share their technology expertiese as well. A technology committee was started and had its first meeting last week. Teachers were very excited about working together to get Wilson going with technology. Next year will be an exciting year at Wilson with technology as a key focus for all.
